St. Mike's Opens With Win

St. Michael's began its defense of its regular season title with a 7-3 win over Markham on Friday night. It was a game of runs as the Buzzers raced out to a 5-0 lead at the end of the first stanza. The second period belonged to Markham as the Waxers scored three times in the first 8:07 to draw close. St. Mike's put the game away with two goals in the final frame, which included Erik Axell's first of the season to complete the scoring. For the game, Erik scored a goal and added an assist. Nick D'Agostino picked up an assist for the Buzzers as well.

St. Mike's next game is Monday in Hamilton.

Stouffville, which joins St. Mike's in the inaugural Central Division, will begin its season on Thursday when it hosts Newmarket.

Oakville, the OPJHL's defending RBC representative, begins its season on Friday against Mississauga. Oakville will play in the Mackinnon Division.

Note: The Central Division is a one year pilot program envisioned to be the Ontario Hockey Association's premier development division. For this season the teams will remain in the OPJHL and play an independent schedule while still qualifying for the league playoffs. The program is intended to place a greater emphasis on operating standards and developing players for the OHL, CIS, and NCAA. In addition to St. Michael's and Stouffville, the participating teams are Coburg, Hamilton, Markham, Newmarket, Toronto, and Wellington.
