Victoria Kick Starts Playoffs

Victoria got off to a blazing start in its opening series with Nanaimo scoring 6 goals in the middle frame on its way to a 9-1 win of Friday. Joel Lowry scored a goal and added three assists to pick up the game's 1st-Star, while Madison Dias scored two goals and pitched in with a helper to receive the game's 3rd-Star.

Game 2 is at Bear Mountain on Saturday.

Cimetta To Cornell

Chris Heisenberg has reported that Matt Cimetta (5' 10", 180), a 1995-born defenseman with Elgin-Middlesex Midget Minors has committed to the Big Red for 2013 or 2014. Matt has scored 24 goals and picked up 41 assists in 56 games for the Chiefs this season. Matt has also played a game with Sarnia (GOHL) as an affiliate this season.

Matt has previously played with the Lambton and Honeybaked programs.

This is Matt's OHL draft year so that will bear watching this year.

BCHL Preps For Playoffs

The BCHL regular season is over.

Vernon is the 1st seed in the Interior Conference and has received a bye into the second round. John Knisley completed his first season in the BCHL by finishing tied for 12th among rookie scorers.

Victoria is seeded 4th in the Coastal Conference and will face Nanaimo in its opening series beginning Friday. Joel Lowry finished tied for 16th in the league scoring race despite missing 18 games. Joel finished tied for first in points per game among players active in at least a third of a team's games. Madison Dias also had a strong regular campaign and finished fourth in scoring among his fellow Griz.

USHL All-Stars Named

The USHL named its mid-season All-Star teams on Friday. Three future Big Red players were honored with selection to the teams.

Brian Ferlin (Indiana Ice) was named to Eastern Conference team, while John McCarron (Lincoln Stars) and Joakim Ryan (Dubuque Fighting Saints) were named to the Western Conference team.

The USHL will not be holding an all-star game this season.

Congratulations to the guys are their honor.

USA Sweeps Five Nations

Cole Bardreau scored a goal and added a helper in the USA's U18s 7-4 win over Finland on Sunday to complete the Five Nations Tournament with a 4-0-0 record. Earlier the USA had defeated Sweden (6-2), Russia (10-4), and the Czech Republic (3-1). Cole scored three goals and had three assists with no penalty minutes for the young Nationals.

The tournament was held in Hradec Kralove, Czech Republic.

Hawk Soars To East Hill

Jacob MacDonald (6'1, 198), a 1993-born defenseman from Brighton, Michigan has committed to Cornell. Jacob currently plays for Waterloo (USHL) and has scored 6 goals and added 15 assists in 34 games for the Black Hawks, which currently places him sixth in scoring among defensemen.

Jacob has twice been named the league's defensive Player of the Week this season.

Jacob becomes the third member of Team Red (with Cole Bardreau and Joakim Ryan) from the final NTDP camp to join the Big Red.
