RoughRider Commits To Cornell

The Cedar Rapids RoughRiders announced that Vince Mihalek (5' 10", 175), a 1990-born forward, has committed to the Big Red, presumably for 2009. Vince, who is from Willowick, OH, spent last year at Gilmour Academy where he recently completed his junior year. Vince was originally scheduled to spend this season with Mahoning Valley in the NAHL before the RoughRiders selected him in the 4th round (43rd overall) of the USHL draft.

Vince was considered one of the top prospects in the Cleveland Barons AAA system before moving to Gilmour. His move to Gilmour was prompted by his desire to put himself in a more competitive academic environment. He is reportedly a quick and talented offensive player, with a bit of a tough edge to his game. Vince participated in the recent Select 17 camp, where he scored 2 goals in 5 games. Vince was also invited to the prestigious Elite Prospects Showcase in 2005.

Welcome to the Big Red, Vince.

Cushing Blueliner To The Red

US Hockey Report has announced that Sean Whitney (6' 4", 215), a 1989-born defenseman, has committed to Cornell for the 2008 season. Sean, a solid defensive player who reportedly plays his zone very well, scored 4 goals and added 17 assists in 29 games last year. Sean may have much more offensive upside than last year's numbers appear to indicate. Sean was one of the top-scoring blueliners at the recent New England Pro-Am tournament with 3 goals and an assist in 3 games, even outscoring his teammate Broc Little (who should be one of the ECAC's top incoming offensive players). Sean is also the younger brother of Pittsburgh's Ryan Whitney (Cushing/BU) who is one of the top-scoring defensmen in the NHL.

Sean is from Scituate, Massachusetts (same hometown as Joe and Mike Devin), and is currently scheduled to finish his senior year at Cushing.

Chris Heisenberg has Sean ranked 8th among defensmen in NE Preps and 44th overall in the Massachusetts/New England region.

Welcome to the Big Red, Sean.
