Cornell Announces 2007 Class

The Big Red announced their incoming 2007 class of recruits today. There are no real surprises on the list, though the announcement does confirm that Jacob Johnston will be walking on the team. An interesting note is that seven of the eight players have previous or current family connections to Cornell hockey.

  • Jordan Berk (father, Doug, played at Cornell with Geoff Roeszler)
  • Joe Devin (brother of Mike)
  • Mike Devin (brother of Joe)
  • Jacob Johnston (sisters Rebecca and Sarah play for Cornell's women's team)
  • Patrick Kennedy (brother of Michael)
  • Riley Nash (brother of Brendon)
  • Tyler Roeszler (father, Geoff, played at Cornell with Doug Berk)
  • Brandon Burlon Update

St. Michael's has announced that Brandon Burlon (6', 175), a 1990-born defenseman, has committed to Michigan for 2008. Burlon had also considered Cornell, though according to the release Michigan was always his top choice. Western College Hockey speculates that Michigan had probably been waiting for Ryan Grimshaw to make his decision before moving on to Burlon, which seems reasonable given the timing of the two commitments.

    Joe Bitz Update

Joe Bitz (6' 2", 200), a 1986-born forward, will be attending St. Norbert's this fall. St. Norbert's is a Division 3 school which plays in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association. Joe had his best season with the Nanaimo Clippers this year, scoring 28 goals and adding 30 assists in 76 games. Joe, of course, is the brother of senior captain, Byron Bitz.

    Ryan Grimshaw Update, III

Ryan Grimshaw (6', 185), a 1990-born defenseman, has committed to Harvard for the 2008 season, according to the US Hockey Report. Grimshaw is from Rochester, NY and spent this past season in Ann Arbor playing with the USNTDP. Prior to moving to Ann Arbor, Grimshaw spent a season prepping at Salisbury, where he played for Harvard coach Ted Donato's brother, Dan (who recently resigned from Salisbury). Grimshaw selected Harvard over Cornell, BU, Michigan, and RPI.

    Jesse Brown Drafted

Jesse Brown was selected by the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders in the third round. Jesse, a potential Big Red target, was the 34th overall selection. It'll be interesting to see if Jesse joins Cedar Rapids or jumps to the OHL, where his rights are held by Owen Sound.

USHL Draft Update: Locke Jillson to Bucs

Locke Jillson was just drafted by the Des Moines Buccaneers in the second round. Locke was the 5th player taken in round two and the 17th player selected overall.

Locke will be joining the Big Red in 2008.

    Congratulations, Locke.

    USHL Draft Underway

The Chicago Steel selected Will Weber with the number one selection in today's USHL draft. Will (6' 4"), a 1989-born defenseman at Gaylord (MI) HS, is committed to Miami (OH) for the 2008 season.

    Salisbury Sizzle

Despite losing head coach Dan Donato, who's returning to the Boston area, there's some hot news for Salisbury fans -- news that may also have ECAC Hockey implications at some point. For the past couple of months it's been rumored around Ithaca that Andy Iles (5' 8", 150), a 1992-born goalie, would be leaving the Little Red for Salisbury. According to US Hockey Report, Andy will be heading to Salisbury this fall. Andy helped Ithaca High School win its 5th state championship this spring and had a remarkable season. In 23 regular season games, Andy had 9 shutouts and posted a save percentage higher (0.96) than his GAA (0.93). Also reportedly heading off to Salisbury will be Matt Reber (Dartmouth, 2008), who's leaving Minnesota to spend a year as a postgrad, and Danny Biega, whose brothers Alex and Michael are at Harvard.

    Connor Stokes Update

Connor Stokes (6', 170), a 1991-born forward with the Syracuse Junior (B) Stars (Empire JHL) was selected in the 3rd-round of the Ontario Hockey League's annual draft by the Guelph Storm. Connor is from Lansing, NY, just outside of Ithaca, and is the son of former Big Red player, Wayne Stokes ('76). Connor was considered a prospect for the class of 2009. According to the Ithaca Journal, however, Connor will be heading to Guelph this fall and forgoing his college eligibility. Good luck to Connor in the OHL; hopefully things will work out for him as well as they did for Dustin Brown, who travelled the same road to Guelph not too long ago.

Another player of interest to Cornell fans was also drafted by the OHL: Jeremy Morin (6', 175), a 1991-born forward with the Syracuse Junior (A) Stars (Eastern JHL) was selected by Kitchener in the 4th-round. Jeremy, from nearby Auburn, NY, appears to continue leaning toward the NCAA or he probably would have gone much higher -- Red Line Report ranks Jeremy the number one player in his class. Jeremy ostensibly dropped Cornell from his list after his brother Chad selected Harvard over Cornell (and others). It is expected that Jeremy will be committing to a school fairly soon (Boston College?).

Another player who will be fun to watch is Jerry D'Amigo from Binghamton, NY. Jerry (5' 11", 185), another 1991-born forward, played this past season with the Binghamton Junior Senators (Atlantic JHL), where he was named the league's Rookie of the Year. Jerry recently accepted an invitation to join the U17 NTDP in Ann Arbor. Jerry, who's ranked the 16th best player in his class by Red Line, was selected in the 12th-round, also by Kitchener.

    Prospects: 2012 & 2013

Reader beware: BRP attempts to aggregate as much information as possible. Nothing truly confidential should ever (knowingly) appear -- rumor and guesswork, however, may be fair game.

As always, please remember that whether there is interest on Cornell's part, or on a student's part, is unconfirmed in many cases. Some of the players listed have been reported to either have interest in or be of interest to Cornell, while others are strong students who have expressed interest in one or more of the Ivies and would therefore be logical candidates or simply come from traditional recruiting areas.

Note: This information wouldn't be possible without the contributions of Cornell fans near and far. As always, any tips or pointers are greatly appreciated. Thank you & please keep the info coming.

    (H) Chris Heisenberg's ranking (rankings are for 2012 unless otherwise noted).
    (N) NHL Central Scouting Watch List: A = possible early round selection; B = possible mid-round selection; C = possible late-round selection.
